The Austin America, a personal
favourite of mine. Why? Well its basically a much more advanced
version of the standard Austin. Looking at the front, we see
that the normal black grille badge has been replaced by a badge
with a white background saying "Austin America". We also use the
side trims which are somewhat similar to those found on the GT,
however they are stainless steel in the middle, complete with
the "Austin America" stamp and reflective strip on the front. |
The, slightly lower, black
over-riders seem to add more character to the car, and make the
bumper look more balanced. On other versions the bumper appears
to be top heavy. |

On cars produced between 1970-71
was a Charcoal Canister. The canister is filled with Charcoal
granules, and stores vapours from the fuel tank, as well as
vapours from the engine when the car is turned off. When the
engine is running, the carb sucks crankcase fumes out of the
drop gear housing breather and the timing cover breather. This
in turn draws fresh air into the valve cover and down into the
crankcase. This fresh air must first come from a hose at the
bottom of the charcoal canister, flows over the charcoal
granules to remove their stored fumes, then enters the valve
cover. |
The America, also shares the
same bumper set up as the 1300 GT, with two number-plate lamps
and a built in reversing light. The chrome strips are through to
the end of the car, along with the rain channel chrome strip.
Both features break the amount of paintwork up that is seen. |

Austin America's built between
1968-70 were fitted with a chrome finishing ring around each
wheel. This appears to dress up the wheel and make it more
pleasing on the eye. However the familiar "A" that appeared on
UK cars is not found on the Hubcaps at all. |
Austin America's built in 1971
had lost the ring, and retained the plain hubcap. Vehicles sold
in the UK around this time lost their lettering and were
replaced with straight plain hubcaps. |

The Black crackle finish dash is
usually associated with the Morris 1100/1300 Mk2, however it was
also fitted to the Austin America. Perhaps it would sell better
than the silver dash? |
The America was fitted with
headrests on the seats, and a middle arm rest. We see the alloy
3 spoke steering wheel also making an appearance in the America,
again taken from the GT. |

The boot, is fairly standard
throughout the range. A false boot floor covers the spare wheel,
and a fuel filler pipe can be seen running through the boot. |
