Alexander offered two forms of tuning for the ADO16, named Stage 1 and Stage 2.

 

Stage 1

 

Alexander Engineering offered a package very similar to that of Downton. The cylinder head was modified and air flowed, the combustion chambers were reshaped and polished. The ports were also modified, gas flowed and highly polished. The compression ratio was raised to 9:1 from the standard 8.9:1. Two 1" semi-downdraught S.U. Carburettors were fitted to a scientifically designed cast light alloy manifold with integral balance pipe. The manifold was designed for maximum airflow and efficiency. The carburettors were fitted with two pancake non-restriction air filters and were completely assembled with the appropriate fuel lines, throttle and mixture linkages. A set of double valve springs were fitted to allow a higher r.p.m without any valve bounce. Two Alexander badges were also included in the kit for "The customer to fit wherever they feel is best".

What did it cost?

 

Well, surprisingly good value for the stage 1 modification: Complete set of parts for Alexander "Added Performance" conversion 47. 10. 0. Or an Alexander modified head only (on exchange) 19. 10. 0.


Stage 2

 

The cylinder head was extensively modified, completely reshaping and highly polishing. The compression ratio was raised to 9.5:1 from the standard 8.9:1. Larger inlet and exhaust valves were assembled with racing valve springs are fitted to the cylinder head. Two 1" semi downdraught carburettors were fitted on to a specially designed and air flowed manifold. These were fitted with all the necessary fuel pipes, throttle and mixture linkages. The whole of the induction system was completely assembled and ready for fitting and the other parts required, i.e. gaskets etc, all came supplied. A special Alexander camshaft and a completely new exhaust system including three branch manifold silencer and larger diameter exhaust piping were all supplied to complete the stage 2 performance package.

A complete stage 2 Alexander conversion kit cost 95. 0. If you compare the equivalent Downton tuning kit it would cost (92. 5. 9.).


All kits were supplied by Alexander Engineering Co. LTD, who were based in Buckinghamshire. These kits were all launched just after the cars. Perhaps the same kits were available for the Mini?
